Cancer Rehabilitation
At Alara Women’s Health, we understand that cancer recovery goes beyond simply managing symptoms—it’s about empowering you to live a healthier, stronger, and more active life. That’s why we specialize in comprehensive cancer rehabilitation, tailored to each woman’s needs through our expertise in physiotherapy and exercise physiology. As a certified PINC Cancer Rehab Physio and experienced Exercise Physiologists, we guide you through every phase of your cancer journey, from pre-op through to survivorship.
Cancer Rehabilitation: Why It Matters
Research from the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA) highlights the importance of exercise as part of routine cancer care. Studies show that exercise during cancer treatment can improve physical functioning, reduce fatigue, enhance emotional well-being, and even lower the risk of recurrence for certain cancers. Regular, tailored physical activity is linked to improved survival rates and better quality of life, making it a vital component of cancer care. Additionally, evidence suggests that for some treatments, supplementary exercise can enhance the effectiveness of primary treatments in targeting cancer cells. Exercise also helps reduce treatment side effects, supporting the maintenance of daily activities and preventing deconditioning.
The Four Phases of Cancer Recovery
- Pre-op Phase: Our program starts before your surgery with a thorough pre-op assessment, allowing us to create a personalized plan that strengthens key muscle groups, boosts stamina, and prepares you physically and mentally for surgery.
- Post-op Phase: After surgery, we focus on restoring strength and flexibility to areas weakened by the procedure. This phase incorporates breathing techniques and gentle, modified exercises to maximize healing and prevent long-term stiffness.
- Treatment Phase: During active cancer treatment, we help manage fatigue and maintain strength and flexibility, providing strategies for fatigue management, pacing, and cardiovascular exercise. This phase is essential in maintaining energy and minimizing the physical (and mental) toll of treatments. Often exercise is the one variable that feels like it’s in your control – you can choose how much and when… creating a sense of autonomy.
- Fitness/Survivorship Phase: Once treatment is completed, we work on increasing physical stamina, cardiovascular fitness, and overall conditioning to support long-term recovery. This phase focuses on returning to work and daily activities, improving muscle tone, and boosting confidence in your body.
How Physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology Support Your Recovery
Both physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology play a vital role in helping cancer survivors regain function and strength. Our physiotherapists use manual therapy techniques and education to alleviate pain and improve mobility.
Our Physiotherapists and Exercise physiologist work with you to create a safe, progressive exercise plan that builds strength, reduces complications like muscle wasting, enhances stamina, and improves overall well-being. By incorporating postural exercises, core strengthening, breath work, pelvic floor exercises, mind-body connection, strength training, stretching, and cardiovascular (aerobic) exercises, we address the physical limitations caused by cancer treatment while also improving mental health and quality of life.
